July 5 2012

Brady at airport before leaving for his mission. Holding niece Suzie!

July 2 2012

I've been stuck in bed all week. But that's good to hear that the oil
is good, I'll start using it a lot more. I think it's even cheaper
than the oil that I'm using right now.

I'm still a bit sick. We did a couple lessons on Friday, a couple
lessons on Saturday, I went out for the full day on Sunday, and so far
today I've been ok. Now I have a headache, sore throat, and runny nose
though. We're going to do a family home evening though tonight.

The gospel is definately the way to put off the natural man. It's
amazing to think about what is in store for us as we endure to the
end. It's cool to see the humble circumstances of those who live here
in Ghana as well, and although they seem to have a lot of hardship I
think that they will be some of the greatest in the kingdom of god.

Sorry my emails are so short

Thank you for all that you've sacrificed for me, Love you

Elder Adair

Hey Em thank you for the email. I really loved reading it. Sorry my
computer whacked out and deleted the message that I had written in
response so I'm going to have to keep it short so I can write mom and
cherish, but I love hearing about what's happening back home. It'll be
an interesting experience to come back home. I think i'll just be
blown away with how different it will be.

I think the first thing I'll freak out about is the grass. Then the
carpet. Unless, I'll probably be dying for food. Haha yes that's the
first thing i'll freak out about. Air conditioned stores with food
that you don't have to worry about dying from :P.

Anyways I love you Em you've been an awesome example to me, and I love
being able to hear from you. It really is so nice to know that you
always have someone who loves you and cares about you no matter where
you are. It's easy to see why families are so essential in the gospel.

Keep being awesome. I'm sorry if I think about home and food too much.
I'm a terrible missionary ;)

Love you

June 25 2012

Hey mom i'm actually doing pretty good today. I spent the weekend
staying in bed because my stomach felt like it was attacking me. It
feels like i'm starting to get better again. Haha and I found out that
it is possible to get a sore throat here because I got one of those as
well. What a week.

Let me tell you our week actually.

Monday we had a normal P-day, at night we went and taught a Family
Home Evening (they are so fun to teach, and you can just feel how
special it is to have the whole family together.)

Tuesday my companion got sick so we just went to district meeting, he
went home and then I took the district leader to interview Brother
Davis for his baptism, of course he was totally prepared and excited,
and then we stayed home the night

Wednesday we got a call at 9 that we were moving house. So we hurried
and packed our bags, or beds, our dresser, our curtains, our washer, a
fridge, etc. moved into the house and spent the day settling in all
our stuff

Thursday we went out, a lot of our appointments flogged so we only
taught a few lessons

Friday we went out and my stomach was a bit hungry. We taught 3
lessons and each lesson my stomach started hurting me. It was pretty
bad by the time we got to the house for lunch but I just dealt with
it. I thought it would be fine after I ate. I ate a big lunch. I ate
some biscuits while I was waiting for my stew to be done, ate my stew,
ate half a loaf of bread. Then we went out again, and gradually each
lesson my stomach was paining me more and more. Our appointments were
all super close luckily because each step I took I felt like I was
getting punched in the stomach, but I didn't want to go home because
we hadn't taught all week, and we'd already cancelled so many
appointments with people that I didn't want to do it again. It was
probably a bad idea because when we got home to our apartment my
stomach was paining me so bad that I just collapsed on my bed with my
clothes on and was basically dying of pain.

Saturday we obviously didn't go out. I slept the entire day. But
Brother Davis called and said he couldn't be baptized as well. It's
definately a family issue thing so we'll have to sort it out during
the week. This guy has read the entire Book of Mormon now and he knows
it's true.

Sunday I was able to make it to church and sit but afterwards I just
rested and did a wash because I knew it would just get worse again if
I started walking around the area.

And here we are today, I'm feeling good, I kinda have a sore throat
and a runny nose. My stomach feels a little weird but luckily there is
only 1 appointment tonight and I'm hoping by tomorrow it will be ok.

It was a weird thing to happen though. I've never experienced
something like that. I even called Sister Shulz and she didn't know
what it was. She just said drink plenty of water, rest, and don't eat
so your stomach can rest and especially not hot peppe.
(It kind of made me laugh because I had eaten just that before I
called and asked her.)

The mission is coming along well. I just have to remember to take it
one day at a time though. It looks kind of daunting looking at how
much I have to learn if I look at the entire two years and what some
missionaries have the responsibility to do. I'm especially amazing at
how much the mission president does. But hey, god knows everything and
has the power to create a universe, I'm sure he can help me do this
simple stuff :P.

But ya when I look at it one day at a time, like today, it looks like
a piece of cake. I liked that talk in President Monson's talk to the
young women on enduring to the end.

Yes we've had 1 zone conference. I think they happen every 6 months.

Umm on Sunday we also have a branch coordination meeting with our
Branch Mission Leader. We do it right before church. Then after church
we just go out to work again.

Yup I feel old. I still feel like a 13 or 14 year old though.

Ya my friends are writing me a bit, by the way -Leslie Frandsen - If
you're reading this you need to give me your address in an email so I
can write you a letter haha

And I just got an email from Adam with his address as well. So yup
it's going good.

I'm sorry about the pictures I don't know if there are going to be too
many good ones. But yes I think I do need to send you a memory card.

I did get the memory card you sent to me thank you. I think my MTC
companion Elder Ayang will be excited to get those pictures.

I actually haven't gotten an Avacado since then soo ya. But yes it's
actually just a guy in our Branch named Paul Wesley who loves to make
us a stew if we give him the money. So now I have stew to eat with my
Indomie and it's delicious. Probably an expensive meal, but still
delicious and healthy. (Im not really sure what healthy means here
though because at the same time the stews have so much oil in them
that they are probably still terrible for me) Do you know if Red oil
is a bad oil?

I want to learn how to make it. I haven't needed to make one yet. Plus
since we're in a new apartment and we only have a small fridge for 6
Elders it's kind of hard to have 2 let alone 3 stews.

Awwww... my time ran out and I had to buy more time. I should have
learned by now not to trust the timer on these computers

Anyways love you all

Elder Adair

This picture of Brady at the MTC two and a half months ago!!
Yea Fante is a language. I only know a few words
Medasi - thank you
Kakra Kakra - small small
ieeko - Working hard?
iyeah - I'm working hard
O ten den - How's the day
Bakor - The day is good
O chin na - See you tomorrow
Yabeshua - We will meet
Nyame - God
Ye Fre Me - My name is
Wo Fro a Den - What is your name

etc. Those are the main ones I know though, so not very much.

I We finally got the conference talks magazine! I've only been able to
read a couple talks, but I loved this part in Boyd K Packers talk "And
a Little Child Shall Lead Them"

"Our parents served faithfully in their Most Important Calling - As
Parents. Our Father led the home in righteousness, never with anger or
fear. And the powerful example of our father was magnified by the
tender cousel of our mother. The gospel is a very powerful influence
in the life of every one of us in the Packer family and to the next
generation and the next geration and the next as far as we have seen.
I hope to be judged as good a man as my father. Before I hear
those words "well done" from my Heavenly Father I hope to hear them
first from my mortal Father."

There was also a talk by David O. Mckay in one of the other Ensigns
that month that talked about how even the prophet and the apostles,
their Greatest Calling is as parents.

Ya the indomie is just like top ramen back home. I could put
vegetables in it, but it would just cost more. I got my friend Paul
Wesley who is making me a vegetable stew that I can mix with my
Indomie so that should help. The stew has spinach, garlic, onions,
tomatoes, beans, etc. so it will be healthier. Of course it has loads
of oil like everything else here though haha. And ya he puts fish in
his stew as well. I'm excited to see how it turns out.

Love you

June 11 2012

This weeks news um.. What did I do this week. At church we had 4 investigators. A lot of the ward didn't show up :(. We are trying to switch to a closer building that people can walk to. People are having a hard time paying for the transport to church. It sounds like it's going to be quite a while before we can switch to a different building as well. I still don't know how they live off their income.

Ya, I should have taken the time to talk with Elder Sam Kitchen a bit more because I'm probably not going to see him for a long time now. Oh well too late.

I can tell you about the things I'm improving on (You can't laugh because I know I'm not that amazing of a missionary)

1. I'm trying to walk faster than my companion. He says that he's always turning around waiting for me to catch up. (My excuse is that my legs are short, and his are long :P)

2. When I get to people's houses saying "Kokoko" which is basically like knocking on someone's door except you just say it.).

3. Talking in PEC meetings, I always have my companion talk about how the investigators are doing and what they need. (I've found out that really I just need to start thinking about my whole day ahead of me, because really I can do it if I just start thinking about what our investigators need ahead of time)

4. Doing gospel conversations before the very end of the night. (I always do them on our way back home, it works but it doesn't really allow for very good conversations. I just more invite random people to come to church.)

There is a bunch more but my time is up.

Aww you guys get to see Emily again? You guys aren't suppose to see her until I get to see her as well haha. It feels like she's been living in Texas forever though. I guess it's probably just cause she's been living away from home for quite a while now.

Teaching is going well. I'm going to be with my companion for another 9 weeks! Yay.

How have the lagoon passes been? Do you guys go very often? What are you guys going to do when Emily comes down?

Anyways Love you

Elder Adair

June 6 2012

Hello Everyone,

Sorry about not getting an email on Monday. The power went out and my email wasn't saved so we're doing emails today instead. I gotta write it all over again :(.

But I'm glad that I get to see your email today :).
The week has been good. I was getting nervous because training calls were coming. Luckily I wasn't chosen :).

I'll probably have another transfer with my companion (6 weeks) which we'll find out this Saturday exactly what is happening.

I'm eating alright. I just need to find a replacement for Indomie at night. It still tastes good but it's definately not healthy for me. I'm thinking of just getting 1 cedi fried rice at night. I think that will be a little better for me. Plus that will come with a bit of lettuce. I might also start getting Watche as well, but we've been told they use rotten ingredients to make it. But so far no one has gotten sick. And it looks like it's fine to eat. But ya I still eat an egg sandwich in the morning, a stew with rice for lunch, and indomie for dinner. And then I'll get a small banana or 2 small oranges for my fruit. I haven't gotten pineapple or mango's for a really long time. Maybe I'll get some tonight.

My companion is doing great. He doesn't want to leave the area. Plus he wants to stay down in the Cape Coast Mission. Once again we won't find out until Friday though. He's been a great trainer though, we've gotten along great. Hahahaha his computer just barely died.. Uh oh. sounds like he's going to have to start his emails again for the 3rd time. Hopefully they'll actually give his money back, or his time. Probably not. But ya he's been having me take the lead in lessons and he covers some of the things that I miss or clarifys to the investigator. But from what I've seen he's one of the hardest working missionaries.

We did have Zone Conference and got to have our interviews though the other day. It was really cool to see Sister Shulz open up about how they were really sorry that they haven't been able to spend much time with the missionaries because of everything that they had to do. She also talked about how she was very shy and had a hard time talking to people. That was really nice to hear that even she has trouble with it. Just to know that we're still all imperfect people trying to do our best.

Oh I don't think I told you that got to see Elder Kitchen. I didn't even realize that he was coming to Kakum on Monday so when he got out of the car I was surprised. It was nice to see a familiar face.  We just talked for a bit and it was kinda funny to hear some of his stories because I'd already heard them from his emails back at home. I'll probably just have to hook up with him when I get back home though because we didn't get a whole lot of time to talk. He was in a really tough area before so I'm sure he is a pretty powerful missionary.

The weeks still seem to zoom by.  The people here are still as wonderful as ever. I don't even know how it's possible that they are so nice and welcoming.

It's getting funner to teach lessons. I'm still not perfect at teaching. Plus I need to simplify my teaching a whole lot more. I think I just throw it all at them at once. When really they just need the basics right now.

Ebenezer passed the sacrament for the first time. That was cool to see. I was actually blessing the sacrament that day and I was nervous as well so I could kind of understand how he felt.

I email in town right next to the area where I proselyte. there's just a internet cafe that we go to. My Part of my area is actually in town but we don't ever proselyte in town because that would just be hectic with all the people passing by.

But people sell food just at there homes. So just imagine at home everyone having a lemonade stand in front of there house. What seems so strange to me is that a lot of them sell the same thing. Hahah it's funny to drive down the road all you'll see stand after stand after stand selling the exact same thing.

For example we were with the AP's once and we drove past like 40 stands that were within like 5 feet of each other and each one sold Banku. It's just funny that they don't each sell different things. It's like luck of the draw if a car stops at your stand to buy Banku.

I've started writing to do lists for myself at night, the nice thing about the mission is that you always have something to do. I find myself rushing for bed basically every night. I'm not excited for the day that I don't have a washing machine though. I'm still trying to figure that one out.

I might have to start waking up at 6:15 so I can get the full 30 minutes of exercise in and then try out Jackson's idea of exercising while washing clothes.

Hey mom!

Haha Grandpa.S. You crack me up. I'll be excited to see you when I get home then ;).

Spencer that's awesome you've got your learner driver permit! I remember starting driving and I was totally terrified. I remember going like 20 on the road I was suppose to be going 50. And I did the same thing as you to get my hours by driving to California. I remember the family screaming a couple times at me along the way. I hope you got to have that amazing experience as well.

Ali! You better be keeping up that awesome art work. I'm expecting you to be so amazing that you can cover my room's walls with artwork when I get home. Haha jk, but really you better keep up with the art work, I'm excited to see how good you get.

Sounds like I'm going to have some cousins that I'd never seen when I get home. I still feel like there is a lot of cousins I don't even know yet.

Lagoon passes?! That sounds fun!

Aww thanks Grandma S:). I'll be expecting mail then. Thanks for the amazing example you've been to me all my life. Oh and definately thanks for all the fun family experiences we've had together. I have so many memories of hanging out with the family in Saint George. It almost feels like I grew up there.

Ya when I think of spiritual gifts I like to think of all the attributes in D&C 4 like

Faith, Hope, Charity, Love, An eye single to the glory of god, Virtue, Knowledge, Temperance, Patience, Brotherly Kindness, Godliness, Humility, Diligence.

Because at the end it says "Ask and ye shall receive, Knock and it shall be opened unto you"

But it's true those gifts really do come as you pray for them. There's no way that I could do this work alone. I've already seen plenty of miracles. I could never do the things that I've done by myself.

This week has been pretty cool. Sunday was a really hard day for me because I was exhausted, but we had tons of investigators and less actives show up which was awesome.

We had Paul Wesley, Millicient, Hagar, Ernestina, Johnson, Adama, Ebenezer, Hannah, Selima, Racheal, a kid named Kofi who looks like 10 years old but he says he's 16. He doesn't speak any English and we talked to him for like 2 seconds on the side of the road and he said that he wanted to come to church. So he walked to miles to church and 2 miles back home. It was pretty awesome if I might say. And that wasn't even all of the people, but ya it was an awesome Sunday. It's nice to see people drawing a little bit closer to Christ.

On Monday we got to go to Kakum National Park. I was surprised that there wasn't any animals, but there was a cool rope bridge we walked on that was high in the air. I was glad that we got a discount. Normally for white's it costs like 16 Cedis but we split the cost with the black missionaries and got in for 8.50.

Afterwards we got to go to a place where they had crocodiles that you could touch. I thought that was really cool. And it was actually really cheap just 1 cedi.

Anyways I gotta go
It was nice to hear from you all!

Love you

Elder Adair
